Why not spend a couple of hours enjoying a good movie with a positive, animal-friendly message?
PETA’s website offered suggestions for animal-friendly, compassionate movies that you might want to watch — or rewatch — in a recent Vegan Grandmother column.
“Today’s enlightened parents and grandparents have a plethora of animal- and environment-friendly movies with strong themes of compassion and animal rights,” Michelle Rivera says in her post on PETA Prime.
Here’s her list of some of the best:
- Finding Nemo
, with several human storylines
- Shark Tale
, which includes a shark who is outcast because he is vegetarian
- Marley and Me
, about overcoming the challenges of a new dog
- Because of Winn-Dixie
, in which a girl meets a homeless dog who helps her get to know the town
- Happy Feet
,with its environmentalism message
- Bolt
, about an acting horse and the responsibility humans have toward their companion animals
Rivera reminds us not to forget Old Yeller, Bambi and Babe
, too.
One person commenting on her article suggests Free Willy is a good choice. Another poster recommends the 1978 movie Watership Down. (It’s about a group of rabbits whose home is destroyed and their journey toward a new one.) Fly Away Home
gets a mention, too.
For the complete story, see “The Vegan Grandmother: Great Movies — Great Messages“, posted on PETA Prime July 21. (While it must be noted that the tactics of PETA have sometimes been called into question, the organization is at its core a good voice in the world aimed at reducing the impact humans have on other living beings.)
A quick click over to Amazon or a stop at your local movie store could have you on your way to an evening of kindness, compassion and entertainment. Let us know what you think of this list and offer your own suggestions.
