Andre Agassi Honored for Good Works

Andre Agassi was honored last week in New York for the work of his Andre Agassi Foundation.

The foundation has raised $75 million so far and has used it to start a charter high school in a poor section of Las Vegas.

“Life’s blessings are not handed out evenly,” he told the crowd, according to Bill Dwyre’s article available on the Los Angeles Times website. “Caring means doing.”

Agassi was honored as part of a ceremony recognizing athletes who have given back. Also honored were Doug Flutie, David Robinson and Mia Hamm.

The Andre Agassi Foundation transforms education in two ways, according to its Internet site. It supports the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, which strives to provide underserved youth in Las Vegas a first class K-12 education to prepare for excellence in college and beyond. The Foundation also advocates for increased investment and accountability in public schools.

Agassi created the Foundation in 1994 and continues to be deeply involved with it. The Foundation’s ongoing work is supported by the generosity of Andre Agassi and a network of dedicated partners, donors and volunteers, the site says.
